Electrical & Controls Technician
Job Summary
This Electrical & Controls Technician position sits above the Electrical Apprentice level and is suited for an individual who has developed foundational electrical skills and is ready to take on greater responsibility in the field. Working under the general supervision of a Senior Electrician, the Electrical & Controls Technician performs electrical installation, troubleshooting, and controls work at water and wastewater facilities — including lift stations, booster systems, and treatment plants — with the ability to execute assigned scopes of work with a meaningful degree of independence. This role also serves as a point of contact with clients and on-site project personnel, requiring professional communication and sound technical judgment.
Duties and Responsibilities

Perform electrical installations including panels, conduit, wiring, Motor Control Centers (MCCs), and associated equipment at municipal water and wastewater facilities with limited direct supervision.

Diagnose and troubleshoot electrical system faults, including power delivery, instrumentation, and field devices; complete repairs and document findings.

Install, configure, and support control system components including PLCs (Programmable Logic Controllers), floats, probes, Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs), and related instrumentation.

Support SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) system integration, remote monitoring setup, and communications wiring.

Lead or independently execute assigned field tasks on site, coordinating directly with clients, facility operators, and project stakeholders as needed.

Conduct preventative maintenance inspections, electrical system evaluations, and produce accurate field documentation and reports.

Assist Senior Electricians on complex system upgrades, design-build projects, and control panel fabrication and programming activities.

Mentor and provide task-level direction to Electrical Apprentices on shared job sites.

Ensure all work is performed in compliance with the National Electrical Code (NEC), applicable local codes, OSHA safety standards, and company safety policies.

Communicate job status, site conditions, and any issues clearly to the supervising Senior Electrician.

Perform other duties as assigned.
Primary Qualifications

Minimum 2-4 years of hands-on electrical field experience, preferably in industrial, municipal, or water/wastewater environments.

Demonstrated ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, panel drawings, and control wiring diagrams.

Working knowledge of motor controls, control panel components, and basic PLC/SCADA systems.

Familiarity with the National Electrical Code (NEC) and applicable safety standards.

Valid driver's license with a clean driving record required.

NC Electrical Apprentice Registration or progress toward NC Journeyman Electrician licensure preferred.

Physical ability to work outdoors in varied weather conditions, lift up to 50 lbs, and work in confined spaces and at heights.

Proficiency with standard electrical hand tools, power tools, and test equipment (multimeter, megger, clamp meter, etc.).

Work Conditions
This position is primarily field-based with regular travel to project sites throughout North Carolina, including municipal water and wastewater facilities such as lift stations, booster stations, and treatment plants. Work is performed outdoors and in industrial environments, including confined spaces and elevated work areas. Solo site visits and client-facing work are expected at this level. Extended hours may be required during emergency response, critical system failures, or peak project workloads. Personal protective equipment (PPE) is required and will be provided.

The employee is not eligible to receive short-term disability benefits if the employee is receiving workers’ compensation benefits.
